My introduction to tabletop role playing was, weirdly, the result of being a lifelong Trekkie. I’ve seen every iteration of Trek bar the original animated series. So the third season of Picard was always going to be watched.
I did not expect Captain Liam Shaw. Less that I would fall head over heels. When he met an untimely death, I was heart-broken and took to Twitter to express my distress about being made to care to Todd Stashwick. At which point I realised that here was a nerd.
Being a one myself, I began to read Todd’s interviews and one thing he said time and again was to “find your people” aka nerds that shared the same nerdy interests. That advice has led me on several journeys, but the important one is it brought me to D&D.
The first game I ran was one of Todd’s, found in the back of his Mystic Libations book. However, being a writer, I really wanted to create my own stories. So I asked him how one does that in terms of a one-shot. He very generously answered and the advice he gave me is the bones on which I’ve built every adventure since. If it ain’t broke and all that.
The more I ran games, the more I fell in love with doing so. I started learning other systems to expand my repertoire and because a change is as good as a rest. My aim is to be a professional GM and supplement author. A big goal to be sure, but one I am confident in achieving.
